Are you at risk of a brain tumor?

We know that the abnormal growth of cells is called a tumor. When developed in the brain or around, it's called a central nervous system tumor or a brain tumor.

They can be malignant i.e. cancerous or benign i.e. noncancerous with different paces of growth. According to reports by top neurosurgeons in India, cancerous tumors are only one-third of the total. But they can be detrimental anyway as they impair brain function. Nerves, blood vessels, and tissue around them can be pressed.

If they develop in the brain, they are primary tumors. If spread from another body part, they are secondary tumors or metastatic tumors.

Causes

Nobody’s confirmed the real culprit but mutations or defects in the genes or environmental rays like X-rays are infamously blamed for the disease.

Symptoms

The type of tumor, its location, and size decide the symptoms. Symptoms of brain tumor may include:

  1. Severe Headaches
  2. Changes in Behavior or personality
  3. Amnesia, thinking, speaking, or understanding language
  4. Balance or coordination issues
  5. Lack of concentration
  6. Nausea and vomiting
  7. Numbness, weakness, or tingling
  8. Problems with hearing, vision, or speech
  9. Seizures
  10. Unusual sleepiness

Diagnosis

1. Biopsy

A sample of tissue of the tumor is taken through the needle and studied for details like its speed of multiplication and spread.

2. Medical history

The basic examination covers the symptoms, any medical history, surgeries, or injuries if any.

3. Imaging tests

Doctors get to see if the tumor is cancerous through tests like CT scans, MRI, SPECT, and PET. Probably affected organs are also checked to determine their spread.

4. Neurological Test

Coordination, memory, balance, hearing, vision, and reflexes are being checked through this test. Different parts of the brain are responsible for different functioning and hence the results will show the part of the brain affected.

5. Spinal tap

The fluid from the spine is extracted with the help of a needle. Fluid is then checked for cancer cells if any.

Dr. Mukesh Pandey, the top neurosurgeon in India with MS (General Surgery) and MCh (Neurosurgery) strongly believes that spreading awareness can help save lives through early detection. He has successfully treated several cases with brain tumor surgery.
