Brain Doctor or a Neurosurgeon – Whom should you visit?

Neurology is a study of the nervous system which regulates and coordinates body activities. The nervous system is a complex structure and can be divided into:

1. Central nervous system - The brain and spinal cord.

2. Peripheral nervous system - Neural elements, such as eyes, ears, skin, and other "sensory receptors".

One who specializes in the field of neurology is a neurosurgeon and treats:

1. Cerebra- vascular disease, such as stroke. Stroke is a medical emergency when the supply of blood is interrupted to parts of the brain causing the death of cells due to lack of oxygen and nutrient supply. This can be cured and prevented if treated timely.

2. Headache disorders or recurrent headache – It is very common; almost half of the adult population have had a headache at least once within the last year.

 3. Multiple sclerosis. The protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers is being attacked by the immune system which eventually causes communication problems between the brain and body can be permanent damage or deterioration of the nerves. No cure has been found for the disease but symptoms can be controlled and managed through treatment.

 4. Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease).

 5. Movement disorders, such as Parkinson's disease. A disorder of the central nervous system that affects movement. Nerve cell damage in the brain causes dopamine levels to drop, leading to the symptoms of Parkinson's. Medication can help control the symptoms of Parkinson's.

 6. Infections of the brain and peripheral nervous system.

 7. Seizure disorders, such as epilepsy.

 8. Spinal cord disorders.

 9. Speech and language disorders

A neurosurgeon should be visited in case of dizziness, convulsions, repeated headaches, migraines, or problems with vision, memory and movement. One such expert neurosurgeon who’s known for his medical expertise is Dr Mukesh Pandey MBBS, MS (General Surgery), MCh (Neurosurgery). Associate Director & Head of Department –Neurosurgery - Asian Hospital Faridabad.
